Product Description
Description: Jam jars store jam, the Sun jar collects and stores sunshine so that you can use it at night. Made with a traditional Mason jar and high tech energy efficient lighting! Captured inside the jar are a highly efficient solar cell, rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the three LED lamps inside the jar.

Works if you follow instructions July 21, 2010

Mine worked fine with the supplied NiMh battery. You really have to put it in direct sunlight for 8 hours or more to get a good charge. It is best as a garden ornament in a sunny spot, not on a windowsill.
Be aware the if you replace the battery you need to use NiMh or NiCd rechargeable batteries!
What about replacing of solar panel? June 28, 2010

Ok. Apparently, that solar cell doesnt have enough power to charge even branded AA. So anyone tried to replace it to something more powerful? I like the design but it pisses me off that even after full day of brightest direct outdoor sunlight with open lid (!!!) it still discharges pretty quickly.

I am very happy with the 3 that work. They give off a beautiful glow that warms my heart. Of the remaining 2, one doesn't light up at all and the other only lights up at a barely noticeable level even with a full day of sun. I replaced the rechargeable batteries in the two that don't work with the same results so I'm stuck as to what I can do about the 2 duds (it's too late for me to return them).
The clamp to shut the jar lid is pretty flimsy. The piece often falls off and I need to pop it back into place. The frosted glass jar itself is solid and pretty.
To get the best results, I open the lid to expose the solar panel to direct sunlight. If I keep the lid closed to charge the batteries, the frosted glass seems to reduce the efficiency and I end up with dimmer lights at night.
I gave away 2 of the ones that work well and my friends are very happy with their sun jars. Had all 5 worked well, I would have given 5 stars despite the flimsy clamp because they truly are beautiful at night.

This is overall a great product! If you replace the included battery with a name-brand batter you will get better results.

I bought this with the Moon jar. The Sun jar wasn't nearly as bright and the light not good enough. I returned it. Shame as it would have been a nice product had the light been sufficent.
