Bright lights, burly cases, fail-safe on/off switches, virtual indestructibility: there are very good reasons to rave about Mag Instrument flashlights. It goes without saying that a flashlight defeats its own purpose if it can't be trusted, which is why so many people spend a little extra for this four D-cell Mag-Lite. We've dropped ours off ladders, kicked it down stairs--just generally abused the thing--and it lights up now just as readily as it did when we first turned it on. Speaking of which, the on/off switch is one of the first things to fail on generic flashlights. Mag-Lite's switch is rubber coated and weather protected; frankly, it seems incapable of ever wearing out, even after thousands of clicks. Plus, twisting the flashlight's head gives you an option between a tight beam and a floodlight. More importantly, the combination of a supertough krypton gas lamp and high-quality reflectors provides unusually bright light. There's also an extra lamp in the tail cap so you've always got a backup--how many other flashlights deliver that?But the Mag's indestructibility is its main selling point. Mag Instrument builds its flashlights with ultrastrong aluminum alloy cases that have been anodized both inside and out to resist rust. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. It's hard to imagine damaging one of these lights. Think of it this way: if, as one of our customers suggests, there were a kingdom of flashlights, Mag-Lite would be crowned king. --Jon Groebner

 Focus isn't the focus any more. August 25, 2010

I think Maglite has forgotten that they are supposed to be all about the reflector's precise focusing ability. Maybe they think no one will notice?
I've got four 3-D Maglites from about 12 years ago. They're in my cars and one's beside my bed. Those bad boys will focus an extremely tight nearly perfectly circular beam that is impressive as well as useful--especially at moderate to great distances.
A month or two ago, I bought a new 3-D Maglite. It was sad. Poor focus. At best, it produces an illuminated region that is partly circular and partly elliptical that spreads out way too much even at moderate distances. It left me wanting, but, I figured I bought it from a mega store where individual units from a big production run can often have flaws that are passed on to the consumer. The price was low and I'm just stashing it in the basement for power outage emergencies and such so I tolerated its flaw and stored it in an accessible location.
For many years I've wanted a 6-D Maglite. I ordered from Amazon. Couldn't wait until it arrived. I dreamed: Power; Precision; Prowler's beware because if you're within a quarter mile, I'll simply light you up and ID you in an instant even in a storm.
So, my shiny new 6-D cell Maglite arrived several days ago. Dagnabbit! It's got the same poor focus as the 3-D Maglite I recently bought at the megastore. I can only describe the beam just as I mentioned above. It's not a tight circle. It's somewhat a blend of a sloppy circle and a wayward escaping ellipse.
I also ordered 2 Maglite MagnumStar (Xenon) bulbs for this thing. They came today. (Why they came several days later I don't know because I ordered the 6-D flashlight and the bulbs at the same time. Amazon loses money on free shipping deals when they don't stock these things at the same location, don't they?) Anyway, I thought the super duper MagnumStar bulbs might improve things. Nope. You'll see my separate review for them. They lack the snub nose ground glass focusing lens that they used to have incorporated into the bulb design. Now they're just plain glass.
So, I guess it's just like all things: They "ain't" what they used to be. That's two recent Maglites I've purchased with poorly focused beams. I'm presuming that's just the design average these days. I'll keep the 2 Maglite's I just bought because I don't want to hassle returning them. I guess they're not technically defective. They're just degraded by design. But, I won't buy any more. Looks like I can get the same beam or maybe much better in a cheaper flashlight from another company.
I now find that I severely cherish my four 12 year old 3-D cell Maglites. Their beams are tight! I guess I'd better get busy stocking up on spare parts. These old models require a special tool to replace the switch. I think the switch and tool are rare but I think I've seen a source for them. In the past, I figured it was cheaper just to replace the flashlight if the switch failed. Now I see that's not true becuase I can't buy a new flashlight like those anymore. I need to gear up to maintain these four precious light sticks!

why are all these reviews on this 6 cell mag light mostly for the 2 and 3 cell mag lights?make little to no sense and is unfair to the product being review it is a great product never have had a problem from any of my mag lights except 1 where i had some defective batteries and the flashlight was replaced by the battery company so i have no complaints whatsoever

Due to its rigid aluminum construction any form of shock absorbed by the light, generally from a fall at hip level or even a roll out of the truck door, will kill the bulb. I've been told the LED version of this light is a better option as the LED's are more durable.
Personally after owning a few of these I find them to be over rated. They are to heavy, the beam is very weak when its widened and very small and bright when focused. I find there is no good in between. In my opinion you can get just as good performances with a smaller 2D mag light of even the AA version.

good, strong light, especially when concentrated via the adjustable lens. much more powerful than traditional flashlights i had around the house, and a good price. adjusting the focal length, though, seems to inadvertently unscrew the pieces below unless you specifically hold them tightly in place, so now i set it at the most focused setting and leave it there.

I've owned a few 4-cell maglites over a period of 27 years. They are extremely durable and produce an incredible amount of illumination. By simply twisting the head, you can go from floodlight to spot very quickly. They are very water resistant as well. During my past line of work, my maglight also served as an effective alternative baton.
The only drawback is if you are a boater, they definitely do not float if dropped overboard. If you are a back packer, I wouldn't recommend this due to weight issues. I would recommend the mini-maglite instead which also offers great illumination, the same flood to spot feature, and is very durable and water-resistant, but is much lighter (it only needs two AA cells). Aside from that, I couldn't be happier. They are the best flashlights you can get for the price.
